tawkon interviews cell phone radiation expert Dariusz Leszczynski.

Dariusz LeszczynskiAt tawkon, our passion is to make it simple for all of us – from the newly mobilized to the veteran cell phone user – to control our mobile radiation absorption and, well, talk on.

We also serve as a resource for understanding radiation risks, research, and of course – the debate.

So we’re proud to share our recent interview with Dariusz Leszczynski, a known academic researcher and expert in the biological and health effects induced by cell phone-emitted radiation. You may recognize him from reading his Washington Times column, or if you’re really in-the-know, viewing his lectures on YouTube or seeing his research.

We asked Dariusz to shine some light on the following questions:

What got you interested in specializing in cell phone radiation?

I was asked by then Director General of STUK, Prof. Antti Vuorinen, to look into this issue. It was year 1997.

In a talk you did, you touch upon the issue of children using cell phones and what that could mean in the long term. What do you think about this particular aspect of radiation danger? Should we be proactively taking steps to protect our kids?

Yes. I think it is wise to limit exposures of children. There are studies showing that this radiation is causing some biological effects. However, we have no any idea what the long-term-use consequences will be – will there be any health effects or not? So, kids getting their first phones at the age of 6-7 years have some 70-80 years ahead of them during which they will be exposed to this radiation. We have no slightest idea what exposures over such a long period can cause.

In your opinion, what’s the right alternative to the epidemiology method of studying mobile radiation? What could the research community be doing differently?

I think that studies on human volunteers looking on the molecular level for the responses of the human body to cell phone radiation should be given priority. There are only three studies that examined molecular level events in human volunteers. All of them were small pilot studies so their outcomes are insufficient to draw any far-reaching conclusions. However, it is amazing that we debate whether cell phone radiation causes any health effects and we still do not know if human body reacts to this radiation.

Do you believe people should take precaution until we know conclusively what radiation may or may not be doing to us?

Yes, it is always good to limit exposures to radiation whenever possible and feasible. Simply using the regular phone instead of your cell phone for longer calls, or whenever such option is available. Also, an ear-piece is a good way to limit exposures to the head. However, when using an ear-piece, people should not keep the phone in a pocket because then tissues close to the pocket are irradiated. Finally, keeping the phone in a pocket should be discouraged because the phones are designed to meet exposure safety standards when they are ca. 1 inch away from the body. Once in a pocket, the safety limits are exceeded in areas close to where the cell phone is located.

From what you’ve seen, which countries are taking the best, most forward action – policy-wise and research-wise?

At this point I do not have any candidate. It is a somewhat “messy” field in respect to advising precaution. Even worse is the situation of research funding. Needs are recognized, to some degree, but nobody is interested to fund research. It’s a sort of attitude that as long as we do not know something, it does not exist. It is a very wrong attitude. That is why I am writing my science blog, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, and my weekly column at The Washington Times.

Dariusz Leszczynski is a Research Professor (Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Helsinki, Finland) and Adjunct Professor (University of Helsinki). A big thanks to Dariusz for sharing his views with us. Check out his column and blog or follow him on Twitter.

tawkon for kids: the mobile tool for talking responsibly.

Kids, today, eh? They’re carrying cell phones and they are not letting go. Which means our kids are being exposed to mobile radiation just like the rest of us – but with even more risk.

Think about it: not only do kids have softer tissue, growing bones, and thinner skulls, but they’re also surrounding themselves with cell phones from an earlier age than we did, so nearly their entire life span will have been spent with a cell phone.

And with radiation experts claiming studies are severely underestimating the effects on kids, what can we, as parents,  do about it?

The first steps include equipping them with a headset, keeping the phone out of their pockets, and introducing them to tawkon, free in the Android Market.

Let’s give our kids the power to control their own cell phone radiation absorption. The tawkon app monitors their phones’ radiation levels and then subtly alerts them before or during a call. With the alert comes a suggestion for a quick action to take in order to instantly lower the level – like switching to a headset, rotating the phone, or changing location.

Smart phones – smart kids! And not a bad idea for the rest of us, either.

Have a merry, mobile Christmas (and an app-y new year!)

How well do you know your cell phone? Sure, it serves as another appendage or a digital personal assistant. But take a closer look at it. Sleek. Shiny. Maybe a scratch or two on the screen from the time you – well, never mind.

Now consider this: sometimes the things we hold so close… should be held a little further away.

Cell phones transmit electromagnetic energy in order to make calls and browse the internet. Sounds a little complicated, but you know the concept by another name: radiation.

With the holiday season upon us, and 43% of Americans owning smartphones as of October, the prediction that smartphones will become the majority by the end of 2011 is becoming more real.

Three recommended ways to minimize your risk of exposure are to buy smart, keep informed, try a radiation-tracking mobile app. Start here:

Buy smart.

Like snowflakes, no two phones are the same: inherent radiation levels differ by phone make and model. Use Environmental Working Group’s interactive database to find wireless devices with the lowest emissions.

Know your SAR’s.

That’s not an acronym for Santa’s Arctic Reindeer. The specific absorption rate, or SAR, is a measurement for how much radiation your body is absorbing from the phone. The lower the number, the lower the radiation exposure.

With great power comes…

Every model sold in the U.S. is tested for a SAR of <1.6 watts per kilogram (2.2lbs). How much energy is absorbed on any given slice of tissue on your body? 1.6 watts is what’s used to light up a string of 36 LED Christmas lights. And your Aunt Barbara’s fruitcake weighs about a kilogram… by the slice.

The c-word

C is for… cell phone cancer. The World Health Organization classifies cell phones as a potential cancer risk much like exhaust from gasoline-powered vehicles and, yes, lead.

There’s an app for that

tawkon is a mobile app that tracks your phone’s radiation output in real-time, while alerting you with quick tips to lower your exposure levels. Lower your exposure by altering your phone’s position, its distance from your body, your location, and more.

tawkon @droidconNL Amsterdam 2011

Last month we headed over to droidcon 2011 in Amsterdam, to join hundreds of engineers, app developers, marketers and the media to explore all things Android. Our own Amit Lubovsky took center stage to educate the audience about the risks of mobile phone radiation (making people a little tense), and how to minimize that risk (that helped people relax).

Here’s the presentation he gave.

Google even quoted Amit in one of their presentations!

Enjoy — and let us know what you think!

tawkon’s Ori Goshen presents at The Junction

-Rebecca Krauthamer [Guest Writer], Stanford Class of 2013

tawkon’s resident boy-genius Ori Goshen shared insights into programming for IOS last week at The Junction- an open house for entrepreneurs in Tel-Aviv. Young members of the Tel-Aviv underground entrepreneurship scene listened as Ori broke down his best innovation practices into layman’s terms, with a good dose of humor.

I have to admit the lecture went way over my head, but this was probably because the only things I know how to say in Hebrew are Where is the bathroom? and I do not want rabies please- neither of which factored into Ori’s presentation. But based on everything I’ve learned from him in our English conversations, I can say that Ori has that enviable talent of simplifying complicated topics- like parameter passing conventions in c programming language, and how to watch Megavideo for more than 72 minutes- into easily digestible knowledge bites.

As Chief Architect and co-founder, Ori is the mind behind tawkon’s technology. He refers to tawkon as a “game-changer”- a tool that will dramatically change the way we use our phones. San Francisco recently passed legislation directed toward responsible cell phone use and radiation prevention. As a Bay Area native, I see tawkon as a tool that will become indispensable as the body of global legislation and  awareness grows.

Steve Jobs: “No Interest” So tawkon lowers iPhone radiation via Cydia

We tried the front door via Apple’s App Store, including great discussions with senior Apple executives at their Cupertino headquarters who praised our app functionality and graphic appeal, and explored various technical solutions with us to overcome API restrictions and get tawkon onto the App Store.

But when Steve Jobs personally closed the front door with a curt 2-word email stating: “No Interest” (see original email below), we were left with no alternative but to climb through the Cydia window to let iPhone users see and lower their exposure to cellphone radiation.

Therefore, today we announce that tawkon is available for iPhone users for FREE via Cydia.

So here’s how to get tawkon on your iPhone!

  • Have a jailbroken phone? Open your Cydia application and search “tawkon”
  • Want to jailbreak your phone and download apps like tawkon via Cydia? Follow the simple instructions here.

Regardless of how concerned an individual is with risks caused by cellphone radiation, there is enough scientific findings to justify taking precautionary measures, especially for people (and their kids) who use their phone a lot, with many years of cumulative exposure. The Interphone Study, for example, indicated that “talking on a handset for more than half an hour a day could increase the risk of developing brain cancer by up to 40 per cent”.

We therefore believe that giving people the choice to see and take precautionary measures (as advised by many governments & health reports worldwide) is akin to letting people see the speedometer in their car so they can use informed judgment to drive better. The City of San Francisco’s Right-to-Know ordinance “requiring retailers to disclose Specific Absorption Rate values for cell phones” further emphasizes the public right to know this information and the right to choose to use their phones with the lowest possible exposure to cellphone radiation.

We also find it strange that the Apple user manual instructs users to not hold the iPhone close to your head, but Steve Jobs is “not interested” in an app that shows real-time exposure. If he used tawkon he’d know that most of the time the iPhone doesn’t reach it’s maximum labeled SAR levels. However when it does, it’s very easy to lower exposure by heeding tawkon instructions – like “go back” to previous location, “activate speakerphone”, “hold your phone vertically” or activate headset while traveling fast, among other actions.

Here is the original correspondence between tawkon Co-Founder & CEO Gil Friedlander and Apple CEO Steve Jobs:

And of course if you agree that Apple should approve tawkon for the App Store so all iPhone users can “talk on” with lower radiation, please sign our petition at www.tawkon.com/tell-apple

So without further ado: we finally – welcome iPhone users – and wish you safe tawking!

As always your feedback on our app is much appreciated!

MWC preview: tawkon & WeFi Lower Radiation with Wi-Fi

We’ve just announced an exciting joint venture with WeFi – the world’s largest community-based global Wi-Fi network.

You guessed it… we’ve teamed up with WeFi to co-develop the first app to lower radiation exposure with Wi-Fi – and we’re previewing it at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week.

Spearheading this initiative on our end is Amit Lubovsky who will be glad to show you how we’re using WiFi with WeFi (now say that 3 times real fast) to lower exposure to cellphone radiation. Best to reach us in Barcelona via Amit@tawkon.com and twitter – @tawkon or just drop by IMA Pavilion, Hall 4, Level 1.

So what is this joint venture? We’ve seen that radiation levels are significantly lower during VoIP (voice over IP) calls over WiFi than regular cellular calls. Therefore as we described in a brief media statement, this new joint app monitors call radiation levels, transferring calls to a Wi-Fi connection just when radiation levels exceed the predefined threshold. More details & a sneak peak at MWC to come…

See you in Barcelona where the WiFi is (hopefully) high and the radiation (with tawkon) low!

tawkon – Nexus S Limited Edition: for Google’s New Low SAR phone

We’re proud to announce the Limited Edition of tawkon for Google’s remarkable new flagship phone – the Google Nexus S – making this device the ideal solution for low radiation phone calls! Here’s how:

Low SAR phone (Nexus S) + protective software (tawkon)

= low radiation calls & peace of mind

The Hardware: Google cut SAR (Radiation – Specific Absorption Rate) by more than 50% since the original Nexus One! Kudos to Google for developing a great phone that we’re loving to use, with significantly improved battery life, reliable call connection and consideration for our long-term well being. That’s a fantastic hardware start.

The Software: Add to that tawkon – and you’ll know when you’re actually exposed to radiation, and be empowered to easily avoid or lower exposure just when necessary.

The Timing: You can download tawkon onto your Nexus S right now for FREE. Our release timing is interesting… Starting in February, the City of San Francisco’s cell phone’s right-to-know ordinance goes into effect, “requiring retailers to disclose Specific Absorption Rate values for cell phones”.

Awareness of potential risks associated with cellphone radiation is clearly increasing, and we’re here ready with a practical solution.

We’re celebrating with this special Limited Edition version that is tightly integrated within the Google Nexus S user experience, FREE & Ad-free!

So we’ve covered ‘how’ Nexus S + tawkon is the ideal solution for low radiation calls. Now the ‘why’:

Low SAR hardware is just the beginning. All Phones emit radiation, but when and how much depends on multiple changing factors. Many studies also show that excessive and ongoing exposure increases associated risks. Therefore while the Google Nexus S is a great start, you can really protect yourself by knowing when you’re actually exposed to high levels of radiation, and avoiding exposure with simple actions that tawkon prompts.

A recap for newcomers – tawkon features on Android include:

  • Pre Call – Prediction mode – map your home or office to see low-high radiation zones. See if you’d be exposed to high radiation during a call at any time with a live color-coded indicator on your home screen.
  • During Call – Instant real-time alerts with suggestions + feedback to avoid radiation just when you’re exposed.
  • Post Call – Graphical statistics & post-call stats to see the cumulative radiation you’ve been exposed to and avoided by using tawkon.
  • The Radiation Map – You can contribute the world’s first radiation map – without doing anything! The more you tawkon, the more we’ll all Talk On with lower radiation!
… and of course our super cool interface! See tawkon in action on Android here:

So – congratulations to all the new Nexus S users on your great new phone, and welcome to tawkon – where you can Talk On with lower radiation and peace of mind. You can get the tawkon – Nexus S Limited Edition from our website, The Market, from your phone, or with this Android bar code.
